I’m sure that a lot of you already know what is OpenID.
It is a decentralized standard for login/authentication where you may use it to directly login to most of the website without the needs to register for an account in those OpenID compatible websites. When you login with your OpenID, an account is created with your OpenID immediately when you use your OpenID to login to those websites.
So, how do OpenID looks like and how it works?
OpenID is usually your own website’s URL, such as yourname.blogspot.com or yourname.com.
How it works? All you need to do is to login to your website, blog or any of your account which have OpenID function, then use the URL that is given to you to login other websites or use it to post comments in other people’s blog. Not all blogs or website have OpenID function. And your own website which you design yourself without integrate OpenID in it will not have OpenID feature!
As you can see above, I had written yourname.blogspot.com. And the answer is yes, your blogspot account comes with OpenID function, and your blogspot URL is your OpenID.
There is a lot of online service provider do provide OpenID to users. Believe it or not, you may actually already have an OpenID and you never realized it yet. So use it, don’t waste it!
Here is the example of the list.
Your Google email address is your OpenID.
Yahoo have several way for you to use your OpenID. 1 is to login to those OpenID enabled website using your Yahoo! account. Another one is to use their idproxy.net where you are given a URL to directly use the URL as your OpenID.
Your myspace URL such as http://myspace.com/yourname or myspace.com/yourname is your OpenID.
Your blog URL such as http://yourname.wordpress.com or yourname.wordpress.com is your OpenID
Your blog URL such as http://yourname.blogspot.com or yourname.blogspot.com is your OpenID.
You might be worry that you do not know how to use it.
Actually it is damn simple.
Lets say if you want to use your blogspot OpenID, just login to your blog, and when you go to some websites which have this 
icon or it have a text bar saying “Login using OpenID”, just fill it up with your OpenID URL, then click “Login” or “Submit” depends on what the website says. You will then redirected to a page to ask you whether you want to authorize this login or not. Just click “Trust” or “Grant”. Each OpenID provider uses different words, but it is basically the same.
If you are using wordpress.com or idproxy.com, just do the same thing as blogspot ones.
If you not yet login to your OpenID provider website yet such as blogspot.com, wordpress.com etc, you will see the login page of the service provider first. After that, the page for you to click “Trust” or “Grant” will be the next page after you login.
OpenID actually reads the cookies files according to the URL that you have login to verify whether you are the rightful owner of the OpenID or not, so it saves lots of hassles for you to register different account at each different websites. Anyway, although it reads your cookies, it is completely safe as the cookies is something important when you login to certain websites. And these cookies is not for eat!!!
OpenID can also be use for eliminating the issue where people stealing your identity to make mess in other people’s blog. This often happen in the blogspore where someone uses your name and post some unpleasant comments and pissed people off. So if the comments is posted with OpenID, it will show the OpenID beside your name at your comments. So you can protect yourself and prove that the impostor who uses your name do not have OpenID authentication. It proves that the person is not you.
Having the OpenID logo does not 100% confirm that you are the person who posted the comment at people’s blog. Another thing to see is the OpenID URL when hover over your nickname. If the URL is your own URL with the OpenID logo beside your name, then only can identify the person who posted the comment is you.
Another words, your OpenID is also consider as you identification prove.
Now, where can you use your OpenID?
At facebook. You can add your OpenID to your facebook account. So when you go to facebook.com, you will be automatically logged in to your facebook account.
At all blogspot blogs, unless the blog owner disable to accept OpenID for comments. Just select the OpenID, then write your comment and post. Your comment will be shown as a comment that posted with an OpenID.
At wordpress.com. Just the same like blogspot.com
At Flickr. Just login using your OpenID, saves the hassles.
At garfield.in. As you can see, at the bottom of the comment submission area of this blog, there is a place for you to tick to authenticate your comment using OpenID to prove that it is really you.
