The “W” logo is not Wolksvagen logo, ok? It is WordPress logo!
Anyway, as promised at my previous post, I will write a tutorial on how to use your own self hosted blog URL as your open ID.
Now I selected to teach you how to do it with WordPress and ClaimID.
The reason why I select WordPress is because it is widely used by most of the bloggers. You may do the same thing if you are using Movable Type or B2evolution. But since majority of the self hosted blog is running on WordPress, and myself prefer WordPress. So WordPress is selected.
While the OpenID service, I have chosen ClaimID.
Why among so many OpenID service, I choose ClaimID? The reason is very simple. ClaimID had been used by a lot of people and it has a very good feature where you can link your other OpenID into ClaimID. Not much OpenID provider have this features.
Ok, first you need to have an OpenID plugins in your WordPress to be able to use your URL as OpenID. Go to the Plugins tab and click “Add New” then search for “Yadis”. When you see there is a plugin names “WP-Yadis”, just click install. It will then automatically downloaded into your WordPress plugin folder. Once the download and extraction process completes, just click “Activate” to start use the plugin.
Now, you need to register yourself a ClaimID account before your can start use your URL as OpendID.
Go to http://claimid.com to register.
I am not going to teach you how to register there as it is something very simple.
Once you had completed with the registration, find the link which is written “Make your blog or website an OpenID” or you may simple go to http://claimid.com/openid#delegate.
You will be sent to the page with a box like as below.
These will be the information you need to use for configure your WP-Yadis before you can start use your URL is your OpenID.
Now go back to your WordPress admin page, find the “Settings” tab and click on “Yadis”.
Now you should be seeing this:
At the “Add New Service” drop down selection, select “ClaimID”, then fill up your username.
Ok, now what you need is the information provided to you at the box you see just now at ClaimID, like shown as above.
At the OpenID Server part, fill up http://openid.claimid.com/server
and at the OpenID Delegate part, fill up http://openid.claimid.com/yourusername
Just click “Submit” when you are done.
Now, you blog’s URL or domain name will be able to use as your OpenID. Whenever you see places that accept OpenID, just use your blog’s URL to login without even need password.
If you forget to sign in at ClaimID before you use your OpenID, you usually will be redirected to ClaimID site and ask you to login. Once login and authorized the site to use your OpenID, you will be redirect back to the site where you login just now.
Anyway, besides blogs, you can also use your normal websites URL as OpenID. The steps is very simple and it has shown in ClaimID. But you must know a little bit about HTML coding.
All you need to do is just copy everything in the box shown as above.
and paste them into the tags between<head> and </head> then it is all done.
OpenID serve as an identity for yourself when you are online.
Since a lot of websites now are accepting OpenID, it is just like a credit card’s “Visa Accepted Here”. lol
So what makes different between normal OpenID like yourname.blogspot.com and your own domain name OpenID like yourname.com?
Very simple only lah yourname.blogspot.com as OpenID is just like normal credit card, everyone also have.
While yourname.com as OpenID, it will be like American Express Gold, Master Card Gold and Visa Gold. Got more face when you using it.
hahaha
Anyway, as you can see, I am already using my own domain name as my OpenID. But I am not using this method to run my OpenID, my blog itself is the OpenID server which it does not need to delegate with ClaimID. So I am consider using American Express Platinum Card, lol.
There will be a part 3 for OpenID which I will teach you how to use your WordPress as OpenID server without depends on 3rd party OpenID provider services. If your interested, make sure you follow up my next articles.
