I’m a bit of a coffee addict and there is nothing quite like a hot cup of coffee to appreciate the cool weather 6,000 feet above sea level at Resorts World Genting. I’ve had the pleasure to attend the inaugural Genting Coffee Festival recently and it was nothing but fun-filled exploration of all things coffee, from bean to cup.

In partnership with NESCAFÉ and the Barista Guild Asia (BGA), the Times Square at SkyAvenue mall was transformed into an exciting and enticing laboratory of java.

Over the course of three days, Malaysian coffee aficionados were able to participate in a variety of activities spanning the entire supply chain of the humble bean which are worth RM500 each session.

image

These include coffee appreciation sessions, where highly qualified experts will be on hand to guide guests through a Bean to Cup story, telling a tale of how coffee went from a fruit found in the highlands of Ethiopia to travelling the globe as the world’s favourite beverage, complete with samples from major production areas.

Guests also challenged their taste buds at these sessions, attempting to guess coffee – whether local, pure soluble, stale, commercial or specialty – just from the taste.

Specialist classes were also available during the festival. At the Sensory Cupping class, participants sampled a variety of different coffee intensities.

There were also a latte art class, where steady hands were required to form hearts, flowers or even spell out words through the simple combination of milk foam and careful gestures.

Brewing class on the other hand explored the various and varied ways that coffee becomes a beverage, whether it is through simple stirring or utensils such as drippers, siphons or French Press. Interspaced among these classes were espresso tasting and sensory station, as well as skilled baristas showcasing their latte art and crafting beverage recipes through mixology demonstrations and utilising the wide range of coffee products from NESCAFÉ.

Things also kicked up a notch with a Barista Smackdown and Latte Art Throw down competitions scheduled for the second and third day. And here’s a picture of the winners for the Latte Art Throwdown competition. They were judged on skill, taste and creativity.

If you are a coffee lover and happened to be in Resorts World Genting, you should also make a short trip to ‘France’ by ordering a cuppa at Cafés Richard, located at Level 1 of SkyAvenue mall, just a short walk away from the Coffee Festival. Conjuring a Parisian vibe with black-and-white tiles and dark timber, Cafés Richard is dedicated to the fine French art of coffee.

From cold drip to cocktails, coffee is presented here in a bewildering array of forms, including the French Genting, a cocktail unique to Cafés Richard Resorts World Genting that combines espresso, Grand Marnier and local Bentong ginger. Overseeing proceedings – and always available for a chat – is outlet manager and Cafés Richard brand ambassador Luc Jiguet, a specialist in crafting innovative coffee-based drinks to pair with authentic French Brasseries recipes, who also served as an expert pair of eyes during judging at the Genting Coffee Festival 2018.
